Ningxia Carpet
Northwest China
Circa 1880
344 x 267 cm (113 x 89)

Notes: Asymmetrically knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation
A very fine Chinese carpet, this Ningxia piece is characterised by an ivory round central element composed of branches and stylised cloudbands. Leafy vines and peonies fill the corners of the honey yellow field, which is delicately embellished with sprays of branches from which sprout flowers and leafs. The elegant cartouche border containing floral motifs alternating with small geometric devices frames the composition. The exceptional fineness of weave is obtained by employing silky wool yarns, which also impart a velvety tactile quality that equates it with the best nineteenth century Ningxia carpets.
