Luri tribe
Circa 1900
252 x 201 cm (83 x 67)

Notes: Weft faced plain weave in wool on wool warps
A highly graphic flatweave composed of five narrow panels, each decorated by dark brown horizontal stripes composed of natural undyed goat hair, flanked by very narrow red stripes on an ivory ground. The only comparable piece is in the Vok collection (see H. Sadighi, K. Hawkes, Vok Collection Caucasus Persia, (Munchen, 1996), plate 42). The slightly offset lines created by the joining of the panels impart a special visual dynamics to the piece, bringing us into the realm of abstract art.
