Gabbeh Rug
West Persia
Bakhtiari tribe
Circa 1860
244 x 148 cm (8 x 410)

Notes: Symmetrically knotted wool pile on a wool foundation
The graphic design, the sparkling and translucent colours of pictorial quality, the use of dark wefts and the relatively fine weaving are characteristics of the earliest period of weaving for Gabbeh rugs. Framed by simple guard stripes, the multiple red colour gradations in the open field creates a three dimensional visual effect.
