Ziegler Sultanabad Carpet
West Persia
Circa 1880
560 x 365 cm (185 x 12)

Notes: Asymmetrically knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation
Open field designs are quite rare among Persian carpets, which typically favour medallion schemes or modular patterns based on allover repeats of single design units. In this rare aqua blue carpet we see the true colour magic of Zieglers, capturing a unique nuance with an almost painterly precision. The palmette border suitably frames the expansive empty field in the earth tones that typify this class of carpets.
Provenance: Maple and Co., London.
