Pair of sumak khorjin faces
Shahsavan Confederacy (?)
45 x 42 cm (18 x 16.5 in.) and 45 x 44 cm (18 x 17.5 in.)
|| 14 wrapping wefts/inch.
|| red, purple, medium blue, dark blue, blue-green, tan, ivory (cotton) (7).
|| both missing on the ends, fraying selvedges but completely untouched.
|| I am only attributing this pair tentatively to the Shahsavan, although this star motif is used on bags by the Qashqa’i tribe of Southern Persia as well. There are a few areas of metal brocading. The ivory is entirely in cotton and the weave quality is rather crude by Shahsavan (or Qashqa’i) standards. They feel quite old.
