A Collection of Exquisite Small Persian Tribal Weavings

Pair of sumak khorjin faces
Shahsavan Confederacy (?)
Northwest Persia
Circa 1850
45 x 42 cm (18 x 16.5 in.) and 45 x 44 cm (18 x 17.5 in.)

Knot count: 14 wrapping wefts/inch.
Colours: red, purple, medium blue, dark blue, blue-green, tan, ivory (cotton) (7).
Condition: both missing on the ends, fraying selvedges but completely untouched.
Notes: I am only attributing this pair tentatively to the Shahsavan, although this star motif is used on bags by the Qashqai tribe of Southern Persia as well. There are a few areas of metal brocading. The ivory is entirely in cotton and the weave quality is rather crude by Shahsavan (or Qashqai) standards. They feel quite old.
Provenance: Mike Aykbarak Collection, Istanbul.
