A Collection of Exquisite Small Persian Tribal Weavings

Pair of sumak bag faces
Shahsavan Confederacy
Savalan region
Northwest Persia
Circa 1880
66 x 52 cm (26 x 20.5 in.) and 68 x 54 cm (27 x 21 in.)

Knot count: 15 wrapping wefts/inch.
Colours: red, orange, blue, blue-green, light yellow, dark brown, ivory (7).
Condition: both complete in length although the larger one is missing the right hand side selvedge.
Notes: Both fairly coarse in stitch, especially by Moghan-Savalan standards. As they are too deep to be a pair of bedding bag side panels (the average depth of these is about 43 cm/17 in.) my feeling is that they are front panels of some form of grain bags.
Provenance: Celal Palamutšu, Konya.
