A Collection of Exquisite Small Persian Tribal Weavings

Reverse sumak chanta
Shahsavan Confederacy
Miyaneh region
Northwest Persia
Circa 1880
18 x 18 cm (7 x 7 in.)

Knot count: 14 wrapping wefts/inch.
Colours: coral pink, rust, light blue, dark blue, light yellow, brown-black, ivory (7).
Condition: complete with back.
Notes: It was possibly part of a qashoqdan (spoon bag), which typically consists of one large chanta flanked by two smaller ones, joined together on a woven band and embellished by netting, such as the piece illustrated in Parviz Tanavoli, ‘Shahsavan - Iranian Rugs and Textiles’, Fribourg 1985, plate 265. It would most probably benefit from cleaning.
Provenance: Teheran market (circa 1970), Edi Egli Collection, St. Gallen.
