The very rare carpets from Portugal are characterised by a refined balance between the oriental style and that of the local textile art tradition. In this example the central palmette is surrounded by a multitude of flowers and leafs on a light yellow ground, and follows a decorative scheme which is typical of the needlepoints ascribed to Arrayolos, these being often distinguished for incorporating Safavid and Ottoman stylemes within their iconography. The dark brown border of elegantly drawn palmettes is reminiscent of certain early Persian carpet borders.
