a rug with the cash diaper design
ningxia
northwest china
circa 1800
170 x 120 cm (5'7" x 3'11")

Notes: asymmetrically knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation
An unusual rug distinguished by its design of a central round medallion composed of peonies flanked by two pairs of smaller medallions. This pattern is set against a golden yellow ground punctuated by the refined cash diaper pattern. The leaf and peony border is typical of Ningxia rugs, as is the inner guard stripe made up of the repeated pearl motif, a symbol of purity and good wish.
