23.
a carpet with shou ideograms
northwest china

Circa 1880
cm 297 x 410 (9'9" x 13'6")

Notes: asymmetrical knot on a cotton foundation
Strong and clear graphic qualities characterise this Chinese carpet, decorated by a large central shou (the shou ideogram signifies "long life" in Chinese) surrounded by four smaller shou elements, of an indigo blue colour on a honey yellow background. The stark rigour of the composition is echoed in the elegant border, embellished by a light blue greek key element.
