niche rug

east central anatolia
before 1800
cm 87 x 158 (2'10" x 5'2")

Notes: symmetrical knot on a wool foundation
A rare and unusual village rug with a niche design on a yellow background, the niche created by simple lines that carve into a coral red field, skilfully punctuated by eight-petaled rosettes both inside the niche and flanking it near its cusp. An interesting crescendo rhythm is adopted for the border, culminating in a sort of canopy of lozenges highlighted by the oxidation of the brown wool, reminding us of the shape of thekapunuk trappings of the Turkmen tribes.
