carpet with concentric circles
monogrammed verner panton
295 x 205 cm (9’8” x 6’9”)
|| symmetrically knotted wool pile on a wool foundation
|| Influenced by Berber weavings, this so-called ' Maroc' carpet exemplifies in its simplicity the op-art style of Verner Panton. The plain ivory background, reminiscent of the carpets of the Beni Ouarain tribe, is decorated by a series of concentric circles in tones of dark brown and shades of green, offset with respect to the centre. The optical illusion created by simply displacing a centralised motif from its usual position is a strong statement about our perspectives of design, inviting us to explore beyond our immediate notion of space.
