Near Eastern tribal people prize sofreh flat-weaves among their most valuable possessions. They use these textiles to present food offerings when hosting prestigious guests in their tents. This graphic Kurdish sofreh features a central totemic element flanked by two vertical zig-zag elements in green, set against a rich red open field background. The design’s painterly quality distinguishes this sofreh, with elements resembling brushstrokes. The abstract modernity of certain tribal rugs points to the primitive ancestry behind tribal textile art. This ancestral influence also roots itself in modern and contemporary art.
